The International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict is celebrated on November 6. This day highlights the environmental damage caused due to war. Conflicts leave behind long-lasting impressions, including forests destroyed, water sources polluted, and wildlife injured. These long-lasting impacts affect health, safety, and livelihoods long after conflicts are over.
Environmental harm will also make difficult access to clean water and food resources. Poverty and instability are on the rise; so, the United Nations asks for the protection of the environment as part of human security and peacebuilding, especially in post-conflict reconstruction.
International organizations such as UNEP urge for environmental protection in all battle zones. They call for the adoption of frameworks provided by the Geneva Convention. Environmental protection standards are being well incorporated by NGOs, policymakers, and local governments into their recovery processes aimed at regaining long-term stability in this region. Several projects address sustainable urban planning including the Urban Enclave Live Green, Live Smart.
This day should be celebrated to identify all the impacts of war on the environment. Projects such as Urban Enclave integrate sustainable infrastructures to protect the environment while regaining the health of the communities. With this approach, we'll be on our way closer to getting a better future in which both human lives are saved as well as saving the earth.
